Support petitions are pushing back against cancellation

Updated 27 July 2026

Several campaigns now defend making the movie, arguing that dark fiction is not endorsement and adult audiences should decide for themselves.

The central pro-film argument

Supporters say difficult material can be adapted with an adult rating, prominent warnings and deliberate framing. They reject the idea that enjoying transgressive fiction reveals a reader's real-world values.

The numbers are not directly comparable

The opposition campaign currently has more signatures, but neither side represents a random sample. Petition totals measure mobilisation, not population-wide opinion.

The useful middle ground

A substantial group supports adaptation only if the marketing is honest, the rating is adult and the production does not present coercive behaviour as ordinary relationship advice.
