Can Haunting Adeline Be Adapted Responsibly?

A responsible adaptation would not need to make the story harmless. It would need to be honest about what the story is, who it is for and how its most controversial dynamics are framed.

1. Market it as adult, transgressive fiction

The film should not be promoted as a conventional aspirational romance. Marketing needs to communicate the dark premise and adult material without turning coercion into a cute social-media hook.

2. Give content warnings real prominence

Warnings should appear in official listings and campaign materials, not only on a hidden web page after viewers have bought a ticket or started streaming.

3. Make framing deliberate

Music, editing, camera perspective and performance can glamorise, condemn or complicate the same action. The central creative question is not only what happens, but how viewers are invited to interpret it.

4. Preserve consequences and agency

Changing the source material is not automatically censorship. Screen adaptations routinely compress or reframe stories. The important test is whether changes make character agency clearer without pretending the source contains a different premise.

5. Keep younger audiences out of the sales strategy

Classification alone is not enough if social promotion is designed to reach young teenagers. A responsible campaign should treat the eventual rating as a genuine audience boundary.

Could these choices satisfy everyone?

No. Some opponents believe the premise itself makes responsible adaptation impossible, while some fans would reject substantial changes. The creative team will have to choose which criticism it is prepared to accept.
